Our journey combines natural beauty with impressive engineering landmarks, offering a memorable experience through West Lothian's countryside. 1. **Depart from Polmont**: We began our walk at Polmont Station, conveniently accessible by train and bus, providing an easy starting point for this scenic canal journey. 2. **Enroute to Hallgreen and Falkirk**: As we left Polmont, the landscape became pleasantly rural. We followed the canal and towpath as it meandered through green leafy cuttings spanned by a succession of charming stone bridges. Spring wildflowers and blooming hawthorn lined the banks, creating a picturesque and serene setting for our leisurely walk. There were lots of birds. We spotted robins and tit. We also spotted some deer in the farmlands. 3. **The Falkirk Tunnel - Eerie and Dark**: The route went through the Falkirk Tunnel, a 630-metre engineering marvel that plunged into darkness beneath the landscape. We traversed this damp and atmospheric passage, guided by wall-mounted lights that provided dim illumination. Though we wouldn't recommend tackling this section at night, walking through this historic tunnel added a thrilling sense of adventure and connected us to the canal's remarkable engineering heritage. 4. **Arrival at the Impressive Falkirk Wheel**: After emerging from the tunnel, we continued along the canal to the spectacular Falkirk Wheel, an iconic modern engineering marvel and the world's only rotating boat lift. This impressive double-armed structure stands as a testament to contemporary Scottish engineering and provided a fitting conclusion to our journey, with cafes and facilities available at this popular destination. We were lucky to see a boat being raised from the Clyde to the Union canal. ## Notes - **Cafes, Restaurants, Pubs, and Grocery Shops**: - There's a Sainsbury's Local near Polmont station - Cafes available at Falkirk Wheel - **Public Toilets**: No public toilets in Polmont.
